James Thomas Exercise Instruction – Collaborator
James developed an interest in strength training at a very early age. Inspired by his older cousins, he began training three days per week on an adjustable bench with a vinyl weight set made by Joe Weider, of course. The idea of bigger muscles and improved sports performance was irresistible. As a young athlete he pursued both football (yes, football, not soccer) and cricket with enthusiasm, and cricket remains one of his great lifelong passions. He played age group cricket for Leicestershire County Cricket Club, as well as for the South Leicestershire Cricket League and the Coventry and District Cricket League. Today, at 48, he still bowls off spin for Ambleside Cricket Club.
His first real exposure to the fitness industry came during a school work experience programme at Johns Gym in Hinckley. A few years later he joined the staff full time. Working for World Champion powerlifter John Auerbach gave James access to an unrivaled training environment containing first generation, second generation, and next generation Nautilus machines, Nitro equipment, full Hammer Strength lines, and every free weight option imaginable. It was an education few ever receive.
James earned his original BAWLA Leaders and Instructors qualifications in the 1990s, followed by NVQ Level 2 and 3 credentials in Gym Instruction and Personal Training. In 2000 he became an officially certified Nautilus Instructor at Leeds University under the accreditation of Dr Wayne Westcott.
In 2010 he opened his own facility, United Exercise, located within the Hinckley United Football Club. With guidance from IFBB Pro Rob Thurston, he outfitted the gym with elite MedX, Nautilus, and Hammer Strength equipment. By the time the gym was sold in 2018, it had grown to 600 members. That same year he transitioned to a private appointment only studio, James Thomas Exercise Instruction, allowing him to focus entirely on delivering highly optimized, precision based exercise experiences.
James began collaborating with Whiterock Exercise in 2020. He played a central role in transforming Whiterock’s architecture from a single computer, single machine model into a multi machine, multi screen environment driven by a unified computer. This architectural expansion required extensive redesign, experimentation, and iteration to enable seamless sensor switching, real time screen transitions, and automatic profile handling as clients moved from machine to machine. It was a complex engineering challenge made possible through his persistence, testing discipline, and deep field expertise.
To date, James has conducted over 60,000 sets and more than 300,000 reps using Whiterock’s system, an enormous dataset that helped validate the software, refine the interface, and stress test the code under real world conditions. His clients have embraced the systems goal oriented, quality driven structure, and the workflow improvements have allowed him to focus even more deeply on individualized instruction.
James continues to play a pivotal role in bringing Whiterock Exercise to the United Kingdom. His technical insight, practical experience, and long history of high standards training make him an essential part of the Whiterock ecosystem.
